“We all are who we are because of the things that came before us and got us here,” explains veteran music executive Chris Herche. “It’s important to honor those things.” The Chief Marketing Officer at Cinematic Music Group is discussing his connection to his favorite film, Back To The Future, but it may just as well be a career mantra. Amid critical tenures at RCA, J Records, and Koch/eOne Entertainment, Herche applied diverse experiences to values from his upbringing to make a powerful impression on the industry. Still in his early forties, Chris has had a strong hand in breaking and developing some of the last decade’s top artists, mentoring others, and creatively bringing exciting, cutting-edge music into an ever-evolving marketplace.

Chris Herche is the product of a latchkey childhood in Cincinnati. His family encouraged strong values, including volunteer service, honesty, integrity, and hard work. After losing both his sister and mother at a young age, Chris felt compelled to pursue his passions, given that life can be short. A lifelong fan of music and entertainment, the fresh Miami University Marketing graduate accepted an RCA Records internship and moved to New York in 2002.

Even as an unpaid marketing department intern in a cutthroat new environment, Chris brought his passion to his role. When Herche finished assigned tasks, he volunteered in radio, sales, and public relations. Before long, a position opened, and Chris became an employee. The fresh-faced hire worked closely with legend Clive Davis as well as cutting-edge bands. In the years that followed, he became Head of Tour Marketing and Digital Product Manager. In 2007, amid a changing industry, Herche received an offer to head up Digital Marketing for Koch Records, later eOne. In 2007, he moved to the independent leader with an emphasis on hip-hop music. Herche eventually became Koch’s Head of A&R when they competed with the majors and developed lasting talents like DJ Khaled and Jim Jones. At Koch, Chris collaborated with Cinematic Entertainment founder Johnnyshipes on several projects. That working relationship led to a 2017 move, where Herche took on Cinematic’s Head of Marketing and ran its day-to-day business. Since joining, the label doubled its streaming revenues year-to-year. The company introduced new platinum hitmakers, including Luh Kel, Flipp Dinero, and Yungeen Ace. Cinematic represented veterans T-Pain through his Masked Singer run, Cam’ron, and Joey Bada$$. The company scored over 4 billion streams in 2020 after a 70% increase. Chris stands at the forefront of marketing talent through TikTok, Instagram, and other developing platforms. “We’re a leader. We stay in the front of things instead of being reactive,” says the forward-thinking exec. One of the most respected and forward-thinking forces in the music business embraces the future.
